Even shorter than that...

Highlight the text, then go up to the Application's menu (eg: as I write this, Mail) and under "Services" select "Make New Sticky Note"

It'll make a new Stickies note with the highlighted text for its content

In windows he would highlight a bit of text and use "file, print,

say, frustrated. Any ideas?

Was this application specific? I don't see a way to do it directly however I can think of one work around:

1) Launch Stickies (Applications -> Stickies)
2) Select the text / graphics you want to print
3) Drag the selection onto a blank stickies note (you may have to hold down the mouse button a moment before starting the drag)
4) In the Stickies application you can print the currently active note.

You can sell the side advantage that stickies will keep your tidbits around and quickly accessible :)
