Mandrake is a nice distro for linux newbies, IMO. It's know for
having a nice GUI, good installer, etc. I think you'll be fine
with that to start with. There are plenty of other options, but some
that jump to mind that offer freely downloadable ISO's
include Fedora, CaOS and CentOS.
Also, if you want to skip the download times, come to the Tri-LUG meeting tonight (if you're in the area) and there will probably be somebody with some pre-burnt CD's you can pickup for free, or a small
donation to the LUG. If not, I think the LUG maintains a library
of distro's where you can "check out" some discs to use / copy / whatever.
