On a related topic, I recall an interview with William Gibson where he
comments that he completely failed to predict the ubiquity of cellphones,
and that the presence of cellphones in _Neuromancer_ would completely
alter or destroy the structure of the novel. (I'm paraphrasing from memory
here).
