I have had lasik surgery done at Lowery optometric. It was about two years
ago. I am so glad to have done it. The key is to find someone who has
their own equipment and maintains it. I can vouch for the quality of work
done by Dr. Lowry.

The surgery itself is painless (local anesthesia is used) and takes all of
about ten minutes start to finish. They offer valium -- which I took.

The pain - which was gone by that evening- is similar to having you're a
scratch on the cornea. I could perfectly see immediately! I went home,
used the eye drops and ibuprophen for pain and discomfort and slept till the
evening. I was up, feeling fine and watching tv that night.

You should note that lasik does nothing to fix presbyopia (not sure it
spelled right) which is the need for reading glasses after you hit 40.

I've been following this thread, so I thought I'd weigh in. I've
considered LASIK surgery and decided against it for the following
reasons:

1) I'm pushing 40, so my eyes are going to change soon anyway.
2) I rely on my eyes for my living.
3) I found PureVision contact lenses
(http://www.bausch.com/in/vision/products/purevision.jsp)

These lenses are "breathable" and have been approved for up to 30 days
continuous use. I wear them weekly, take them out on Sunday to clean
(using Renu Multipurpose) and put them back in Monday morning. After
three cleanings I toss them and start with a new pair.

I usually put saline in my eyes in the morning, because they are a
little sticky, but outside of that they're great. I don't do water
sports, so contacts aren't a problem.

Concerning LASIK, you'll find that the people who like it far outweigh
those who don't. However, I got an e-mail from a high school classmate
this week:

"Unfortunately, I am a LASIK casualty and am visually impaired. This
hampered my ability to earn my PhD in Physical/Analytical Chem, so I
took a Master's."

I can put you in touch with him if you would like.

One last piece of advice - go for the $1500-$2000 per eye guy versus
the $500 per eye guy.
