Hi Folks,

If any of you have had lasic surgery and would like to share your
satisfaction (or lack of) with the surgeon and outcome, will you please send
me an email? I'm more interested in hearing about any negative results that
you have had than the positive (expected) outcome.

Hi Colleen,

I had LASIK three and a half years ago. I wish I'd had it years before
though, because it makes a huge difference not having to worry about
glasses or contacts. I know you'd rather hear about the negatives than
the positives, but I'm going to give you both.

First, the positives. Like I said, I wish I'd had it done years before.
Not having to worry about glasses frees you from caring about whether
or not something you want to do will interact with them. I can go swiming,
mountain biking, geocaching, etc... and not have to worry about whether or
not I'll be able to see while doing it. It's incredible. But, even beyond
that, just being able to wake up in the middle of the night and read a
clock across the room is fabulous.

Now, the negatives. When I got my LASIK, it didn't correct one of my
eyes all the way to 20/20. Instead it was at 20/40 (it did correct
all my astigmatism, though). Now, granted, 20/40 is a lot better than
the 20/200 it was beforehand, but I wasn't satisfied. So, I had them
do what's called an "enhancement". In effect, I had the surgery again
for that eye. Since, however, they only had to go from 20/40 to 20/20
and not 20/200 to 20/20 the laser was only on for a few seconds. And,
it worked perfectly. I now have 20/20 in both eyes.

Other negatives... For several months after my surgery, I saw some small
haloing effects around some lights at night. I never figured out why some
would do it and others wouldn't but it completely went away within a year.

I looked quite a bit into the negatives before having LASIK, and pretty
much what I found out was that the vast majority of the negatives involved
not being able to correct the vision all the way down to 20/20. If you think
about it for a while, going from really bad vision to not quite so bad vision
isn't so bad, and certainly a far cry from making you blind (of which, I found
absolutely no evidence at all).

I had my surgery done, btw, from Dr. James Bryan III in Chapel Hill.
(http://www.locateadoc.com/folio.cfm/sid/10/id/202). He did a very good
job and I can easily recommend him.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do. I think you'll find that the
majority of the people who've had it done will *highly* recommend it.

Cheers,
Tanner Lovelace
