ALL ABOUT MY FATHER

A DukeOut film event!

Richard White Lecture Hall, East Campus, Duke University

March 18, 2004, 7 pm (free)

Screening and discussion with reception to follow in Duke Parlors.

Transgender Documentary (Norway, 2002 - 75 minutes – in Norwegian with subtitles) with the subject of the documentary, Esben/Esther Benestad and partner, from Norway, to answer audience questions after the screening.

Director Even Benestad’s father Esben is a respected physician in a small Norwegian town. But he’s happiest when he’s dressed as Esther. Over the years he has become a transvestite activist, dedicated to his personal path of self-realization. Esben/Esther expects no less than a loving portrait. But instead Benestad uses the excuse of filming to confront his father about the pain his lifestyle choices have caused to the immediate family, including his abandoned mother. He shoots some footage himself, but an additional camera crew places Benestad squarely in the story; the variety of film styles and abundant archive footage all contribute to an utterly absorbing tale.

Best International Documentary, Hot Docs; Special Documentary Award, Munich International Documentary Festival; Teddy Award, Berlin Film Festival; Best Theatrical Release, Norwegian Film Critics Award.
