Hello Everybody!

As some of you may (or may not) know, I've been volunteering with the Literacy Council of Wake County for several years and am very passionate about the cause.  Visit the LCWC website at www.WakeLiteracy.org if you are interested in finding out more.

I am also on the fund-raising committee, and we are doing an eBay auction to raise funds from June 8-14.  We are looking for donated items, tickets to sporting events, theatre, etc., hand-made jewelry, pottery, etc., gift certificates to local restaurants, or whatever to include in the auction.

Do you have any contacts with local business that might be willing to contribute to the LCWC?  Or do any of you have any items that you might want to donate to help your own cause - i.e. have you authored a book that you might want to autograph or recorded a CD (thanks Dad), or have ties to a restaurant or hotel, etc., etc.?   Any info or items would be very helpful as I continue to "beat the street"!  All contributors will be recognized on the LCWC website as well as in our quarterly newsletter and annual report.  Links from the LCWC web site to donor sites will also be made for all donor agencies that provide us with their web site, so ample PR and recognition will be provided.  If you have access to any of these things and are feeling generous, I'd appreciate you sending them towards the Literacy Council!  All donations are tax deductible!

Here are some facts about literary in Wake County, NC:
*       36% of Wake County adults do not possess the necessary skills and reading levels for a high school diploma.  They have difficulty securing livable wages, caring for their families, and obtaining health care.

*       A National Association of Manufacturers 2001 members' survey found that hourly employers rejected applicants 70% of the time for literacy related deficiencies.  I wonder, how effective is the advertising of our local businesses if so many consumers can't evaluate it for purchasing decisions?

A more literate Wake County equals more economic benefits for the businesses here and helps to strengthen the community.  If you are unable to donate, please consider bidding on some of the above items under TriangleLiteracy in the eBay Charity section June 8th - 14th (right before Father's Day), or if eBay is not your thing, consider making a tax-deductible donation on line at  http://www.wakeliteracy.org/donations.php.

Thanks so much!
Regards,
