It's not so much that the driver architecture has to change, but whether
the device manufacturers decide to write drivers according to WDM
(Windows Driver Model), which, to be certified as WDM compliant, must
work under win9x as well as under win2k - and presumably winXP. Of
course it is not in the device manufacturer's best interest to supply
drivers for the latest Windows version for all of their legacy devices,
since if no drivers for the latest Windows version are available, then
it forces the consumer to purchase a new device. Nice evil revenue
stream, if you ask me.
My $0.02 worth...

Nor is there any guarantee that your printer will work, as my Father
found
out the hard way. He has a Canon BJC-5000. Canon, in their infinite
wisdom,
decided to not produce a driver for this model and none of the other
windows platforms drivers will work with it. So my Dad now has a very
expensive paperweight sitting on his desk.
One can argue that Canon shoud have produced a driver for this printer.
But
it's also amazing the "Windows" changes so much from one release to the
next that the driver architectures have to change and the drivers have
to
be rewritten each time.
