when i spoke with the former yahoo 'professor of surfing' Paul Skokowski
last spring about this and he said that there was no filtering but that
the surfers themselves effect the rankings by their choices. so that if
more folks searching for 'big bang' actually choose the astro instead of
the ass-ho' then the astros win in the end (err poor choice of words). any
way you get the point. yahoo does offer optional filtering...
a brief chat with one of the googlists this summer confirmed that google
works much the same way. google has an optional filter which is targeted
entirely at porn according to mark whose last name i forget just now. they
tried licencing other filters and they were too poorly done to be
associated with the google brand (or so he said). i did not have the
filter on whilst searching for big bang perhaps simon had it in place
during his search tho ;->
