Airport! Airport! Airport! My airport is configured to rerequest the
same IP even if the power goes out, and I've been running it like that
for three or four months My IP has only changed once, and that was while
I took the damn thing down to rerun the cable under the house and get a
better position for the antenna. In ordinary circumstances, you'll keep
the same IP.

And I'll chime in on the DSL v. Cable question by saying that I called
four different DSL providers and nobody could provide me with DSL where
I am, due to bridge taps and the like. I've been on TW ever since, and
it works quite well - only one extended period of downtime that I'm aware
of (two to four hours) and so far, the latency has been acceptable (I use
ssh and mutt for email, so I really notice when the latency sucks.)

*nod* If you're really worried (I'm not; I'm on a powerbook behind my
airport, so the worst anyone can do is sniff my traffic or hork up the
airport and make it reboot) run Linux or FreeBSD firewalling and just
shut out everything but your own IP in the 24.0.0.0/8 range.
