Umstead State Park is really nice (trails, lakes, streams, horse-back
riding, etc.) and has access points in Cary and Raleigh. I know there is a
very large covered shelter at the Cary entrance with picnic tables and ample
parking. The hiking trails are adjacent. Info. link and excerpt are shown
below.

http://ils.unc.edu/parkproject/wium.html

"Picnic Areas--The Crabtree Creek section provides 80 tables with grills
while the Reedy Creek section has 50 tables. Restrooms are available in each
area. Sites are available on a first-come/first-serve basis.

Picnicking Shelters--The Crabtree Creek section has two shelters. One
accommodates over a 100 people while the other holds about 20. The Reedy
Creek section has one shelter which holds about 100 people. Use of the
shelters is free unless reservations are requested. Contact the park office
for details."

Damn, you are right! It /is/ that time of year, and last year's
geek-nic was great.

Jordan Lake worked out pretty well last year (despite the
no-alcohol policy). Any other good places we could look at?
