Yeah, I'll be in Atlanta - speaking on how to use DHTML to make cool
and useful stuff happen, as well as hanging out with Zeldman and Jim
Heid and chatting about Web standards and the like.

I've been speaking at or otherwise participating in conferences since
1997, mostly with the Miller-Freeman/CMP "Web9*" and "Web2000" shows,
and I'm now on their Advisory Board, so if anyone has suggestions as
to what we should focus on, feel free to drop me a line.

This is my first appearance at ThunderLizard, but I've enjoyed the
SxSW shows and will be there in March as well (Austin, TX). One panel
I'm participating in is called "Location, Location, Location" and is
going to focus on the timeless question: "do I need to be in SF or NY
to be a great Web designer/developer", which I figured was pretty
pertinent for this crowd. (I'm going to answer "Hell, no", FWIW) I
may be leading the "Weblogs in business" panel, depending on how the
panel shakes out, and I can't help but think there will be a few more
that I'll be involved with. (It always happens that way.)

I personally don't get much out of conferences - I'm more of a "give
me an O'Reilly book and a day" kind of person - but it seems that a
lot of people /do/, particularly if you're not plugged into the
scene (via friends in other companies, mailing lists, forums, etc)
and need some exposure to the new and up and coming stuff. If nothing
else, it's an excellent opportunity to do the sort of schmoozing we
at Internetworkers do so well. :)

The Miller-Freeman/CMP shows used to be twice a year, once on the
east coast (NY, Boston, DC in alternate years) and once on the west
coast (SF, LA). Last year they tried a "road show" approach: Boston,
DC, NY, Austin, SF, Chicago; but it didn't work out as well. The
conferences were more sparsely attended, the floor was smaller,
we had a lot more cancelations, etc. So this year I believe they're
only doing it in SF.

I also spoke at a couple of conferences back in 1996, the WebWorld
Expo (I think - it's been a while) and an Intranet Expo, but I don't
remember much about them - they were both "fly in one day, leave in
the morning, don't know anyone, before the conference floor opened"
kinds of gigs, and I was basically being manipulated by the folks who
had laid off my whole team and killed my company, so my heart wasn't
really in it... :/

Hope this gives you some ideas.

Steve
