Here's what I've tried and liked but found parts limited:

StarOffice - it's a hog but it works. It handles multiple POP and
IMAP. Plus it reads and writes M$ documents. It's everything that I like
about outlook but is not outlook. But the main drawback I see is that it
must command full use of the screen. that's very annoying.

Balsa - Haven't gotten 1.0 to work under debian yet (needs build "woody"
to work and I'm not switching yet). But under RedHat 7.0, it's pretty
cool. Installation was slightly troublesome but managable. All in all, I
liked it a lot--but not enough to move to RedHat.

Mahogany - Pretty dogone good. but I'm still flushing it out.

Mozilla M18 - pretty light weight. great browser. no spell check. no
M$ docs.

Honestly, I'm being patient but I've used outlook for years. Although
some people don't like to admit it, it does little things that no one has
implemented (Don't ask me what features, I can't remember right now. I
just know that it's pretty brainless and it works. But the thought of
receiving something like "I love you" in your mailbox is all you need
to switch.).

No clients perfect but they are getting better all the time. I'll give
mutt a try but I was really looking for some like a ubermailclient (yeah,
right).

Anyway, I'll shut now.
