t's the year 2000, and ya know what that means.... time to build an
Internetworkers web site!!!

Here's what I'd like to do:

1.) Let's discuss objectives for an Internetworkers web site on this
list.

2.) If you'd like to volunteer to do actual work -- i.e., site & page
design, admin stuff, etc -- please send me a note. All worker bees will
get greatly exagerated credit for their work on the web site. Your work
on the site will probably result in doubling or tripling of your
personal net worth, make you popular among your peers, and vanquish
turbulence from your soul. The site itself, through some chain reactions
that I've been studying for months, will send a wave of info-activity
across cyberspace, cause a fourth order resonance of meme-waves and thus
reverse global warming.

So you should volunteer!

-- Should try to follow Michael Tucker's idea of following the open
source model when building this web site.

3.) After arriving at some consensus on objectives and strategy, the
volunteers from step 2 will form a "tactical" email list to discuss the
nitty-gritty of implementation... with the hope of keeping some traffic
down on our main discussion list.

Okay?

So... why should we do a web site? Let me throw these out:

* Basic info about next meetings, how to get on email lists, etc.
* Show off Joe Komenda's pictures from the last meeting!
* Continue to further our de facto purpose: the building of
relationships between Internet professionals in the triangle
* Mahir
* Give Internetworkers a place to promote themselves
* Act as a portal for Internet professionals that are new to the
triangle/considering a move.

Here's some ideas I've been tossing around in my head, beyond the simple
"when's the next meeting?" stuff:

* Links to any Internetworker's web site who cares to register...
* Links to news, essays, favorite posts, etc.
* discussion list archive
* Recommended reading list... Such as "Weaving The Web" by Tim
Berners-Lee
* Click & mortar emulator: It will take the stock symbol of an existing
retailer, spider the web and decipher a business plan and then spit out
a Perl script that will create an e-commerce site for the retailer,
saving billions of dollars in web dev. costs.
* Descriptions of other area groups, what they do, how to sign up,
etc... Basically, link to Steve Burnett's page...
* Triangle specific stuff: Good hangouts, maybe even endorsements for
the various establishments that have humored us.
* Banner advertising. Lots and lots of banner advertising....
* Job postings....
* Page dedicated to the Internet professional new to the area...
* Page dedicated to the multitudes of web-savvy college students that
are pondering the "should I stay or should I go?" decision...
* We should rotate something on the front page... on a monthly basis,
say. Something that would give people in our community to check in on
the site every once in a while... But what? Maybe an essay or two... Any
aspiring writers out there?

So... what do you think??
