When you tag it on a comment about a specific incident it does LOOK and SOUND as though you are referring back to what you tag it to. Apologies all around.

Like I said, I've worked in the medical field. It is nice *now* to blame everything on the sue happy people and over use of the ER. HOWEVER, the very reason there are lots of lawsuits is that a LARGE % of the medical folks out there are dolts, boobs and graduated in the bottom of their classes. As long as you can scrape by with Ds you can manage to get a license.

the whole indigient thing is recent. I shared the employee lounge with doctors back in the 70s and 80s. The ERs weren't the medical care of choice for everybody and his uncle back then. The stories I heard would make you run screaming in the opposite direction of anything Western medicine! Plus, one of my jobs was QA (Quality Assurance) and as part of that job I got almost daily mail from the Feds about QA issues. Believe me, bad medical care was been the norm in the U.S. for a LONG time.

Doctors on drugs (VERY common), doctors too tired (WAY TOO common), incompetant doctors (VERY common) are the norm, not the exception.

And now we have a whole influx of PAs, NPs and FNPs and most of them are worse than the doctors!

If you find a good one, hope they are younger than you so you have then to consult with as long as you need medical care!

Hmmm. Boy, you do take things personally, don't you, Lynda. I was simply dis-agreeing with you. I have not had the bad experiences you have, and have not, yet, at least, encountered the tin gods and boobs that you apparantly have. And no, you can't offend me, unless I let you, so no worries there.

My comment regarding unhealthy lifestyles, sueing, and instant fixes had nothing to do with your son at all. I was simply stating my opinion regarding where most of our problems with the medical INDUSTRY in our country stem from. It was my opinion, nothing more.

I am not too proud to apologize however, if you were offended by my opinion, even if there was no offense intended. Consider it offered, though from the tenor of your response, I am assuming it won't matter one whit.

Ray, who apparantly is not surrounded by medical incompetents and boobs... and considers himself blessed.

I would say "no offense" but I don't really care if I offend since obviously
you don't either. WTF do you get off with the "people who have lived
unhealthily, want an instant fix when the s**t hits the fan." WTH does that
have to do with MY e-mail?

How does someone running up a hill, breaking a flip flop and cutting their
foot equate into your rant about "people who have lived unhealthily, want an
instant fix when the s**t hits the fan"? Please enlighten us as to how your
brain works.

Now, I said I'd make the story short, so now I'll make the short story long
and y'all will have all the details, so no one will think I wanted a instant
fix. And, we didn't get "a" boob, we got more than one!

1st -- I was Nursing Service Coordinator for a large rehab facility with 3
wings -- Acute Rehab, Acute SNF and Acute Psych. I coordinated staffing,
all modality care meetings, discharge planning and continuing care meetings,
and insurance pre-authorization and continuing stay authorization. I worked
with docs, nurses, private insurance, VA, Medicaid, MediCal, Medicare and
private pay.

2nd -- I worked the telemetry unit (stepdown unit from ICU) of an acute care
hospital, one of the Sister of Orange facilities.

3rd -- I worked in radiology at a county/community hospital.

So, I'm pretty familiar with how the medical field works, from the inside
out and ALL its dirty little secrets.

Now, on to Son #3. He was referred to the big hospital in the big city by
the local clinic. The hospital asst. CEO himself called me back later to
say "well, you know that an x-ray won't show glass." O.K., so then WHY was
an x-ray ordered to locate glass? Or do you consider that to be "highly
skilled and competent"?

After two weeks with the foot getting worse and worse and the shooting pains
becoming more intense, he went to the little local ER. *That* doctor, who
did meet the definition of "highly skilled and competent," ordered a CAT
scan, the appropriate test to look for glass. Sure enough, pieces of glass
embedded in the muscle and around the nerves and tendons.

Local clinic referred him to an orth surg. That numb nuts told him to live
with it. I suppose he also meets your definition of "highly skilled and
competent"??

In the mean time, the CRPS rears its ugly head -- swellling, purple color,
shooting pains, ankle begins to twist to the inside, foot begins to curl up,
calf muscle begins to cramp into lumpy knots.

*I* called a couple of docs I personally knew and got him into a vascular
surgeon's office. THAT doctor, who I define as "highly skilled and
competent," came unhinged over the two people telling Son #3 to "live with
it." He immediately scheduled surgery but told us in advance that because
so much time had elapsed that he couldn't give any guarantees. That the
surgery should have been done AT THE ER IMMEDIATELY! Which, BTW, was why we
were referred to the ER in the big city to begin with. *Supposedly* they
had an on-call surgeon who should have been able to take care of this right
there and then!

Son was in surgery for 3 hours and the prognosis is that he MIGHT be able to
walk with a limp but that there was damage to nerves and cuts and a scratch
on the tendon that runs to his big toe. That would be PRECISESLY where the
pain occured when the ER boob hit him with the lidocaine. Hmmm, wouldn't be
that the "highly skilled and competent" idiot had hit the tendon with the
needle.

So, the problem wasn't freeloading on the system, or unhealthy people or a
sue happy society. IF you have had the great fortune to only meet good
medical people, I'm happy for you. HOWEVER, I happen to know for a fact
that a VERY LARGE % of the medical folks out there shouldn't even be
treating downers at the local slaughter yard!

The number of doctors that get away with maiming, crippling and killing
people is astronomical. Most folks don't sue. In fact, less than 5% of the
folks with cause ever file a lawsuit or a claim with the doctor's
malpractice insurance, if he even has any!

And, as an aside, Son #3 works with paraplegics and developmentally disabled
children at the local school district. Unless a miracle happens, he won't
be able to work with those children anymore due to district policy. Is he
whining about it? No, he's been working with head traumas and the
developmentally disabled since he was 18 and he plans to continue. He
simply won't be able to work with folks who have certain physical
disabilities.

AND, search as I might, I can't find breaking a flip flop and getting
"boobs" as medical staff as fitting the definition of "living an unhealthy
lifestyle." I'm sure you'll enlighten me as to how that all fits together.

Oh, trust me, I was not making any remark about "the right way". I was
merely commenting on how people who have lived unhealthily, want an
instant fix when the s**t hits the fan... or, as the good reverend put it,
when the "chickens come home to roost"

I don't claim to have lived a healthy lifestyle. I just don't whine about
it now that consequences are occurring.

But yes, it's good to be back... ;-)

Incidentally, we have moved to northern Utah (better paying teaching job,
if you can believe it), and are living in a yurt we finished last week..
We plan to do so for a year, as a historical re-creation project, and to
save for a HEALTHY down payment on some land next year.
