Roxann; I agree that the website's point about spouses and everyone sharing the dream are the most important things he wrote. Homesteading alone after your spouse runs screaming back to the city is difficult.

The idea of draft ponies is interesting, and if I ever have the time and money to play around, I might try it. I don't do any plowing, but could use them for hauling. For now, my tractor is good enough..

Also, I was 41 when we moved here, with 2 babies, 1 and 3 years old. I would not have been able to clear land and build a house, barn, and workshop from scratch (mostly by myself, given my ex's reluctance). I bought an old farm basically for the price of the land; I got cleared, fenced pastures, buildings, a well, septic, driveway, etc. Everything was falling down, but many of the problems (drainage, etc) had been worked out over the 80+ years the farm was in operation. Much of it could limp along functioning until I found the time/money to fix it. Some is still limping along 13 years later. The house needed (still needs) a lot of work, but not nearly as much as building from scratch.

Rob, I read the article earlier and I wondered how your experience was different. Mine is different too. But a lot of the points he raised was dead on. For example, all of the reasons he listed for why a spouse might not stick with the plan are like hearing the exact words from my husband! and it is hard, has been hard for a few years now, but i'm beginning to finally see some progress and think that next year should be better. i prefer to have the tractor, but am having to make do without right now, whereas he seems to think one unnecessary. if for no other reason than to auger post holes, i want a tractor.
