I'm not a carrot man either but this year every bed of carrots I sowed came
up well spaced and I've got tons of carrots now. I'm seeding lots more for
the winter. No such thing as too many carrots since everything on the farm
will eat them.

But my tenative hypothesis is that the above is correct, the main problem
is continuous moisture which is doubly a problem with carrots since they
can't be planted deeply.
