Also, he has subbed to this list and hung around for 15
years, which in my mind shows good intent. A wannabe is just not going
to put up with us that long.<g>

Bev; I don't know much about Bob or his life. But how many 'wannabes' have we seen on this list? They hope and dream, but it never gets beyond that. They, where ever they currently are, don't do anything even remotely "homesteadish". They don't garden, or can, or cook from scratch, or reduce their dependence on 'the system' (anything from buying less to doing their own house/car repairs), assuming all those skills will just 'come to them' if they move to the country.

I did all of those things when I lived in the middle of the city. I bought things in season and canned them. We did all our own carpentry, wiring, home repair, car repair, etc. I bought a vacant lot so I could have a garden; I cleaned out (by hand) the trash and rubble from the house that fell down, hauled in (in the trunk of my car) tons of compost, and built a garden. It was productive, even though it was shaded on 3 sides by rowhouses. I've heard that my fruit trees and grape vines are still the envy of the neighborhood; my fig tree is almost up to the roof of a 3-story rowhouse. My point is that nothing could have stopped me from getting my hands in the dirt and growing things, even in the middle of the city. I know that you also did these things before you moved to the country, too.

Homesteading is a mindset, almost a calling; some people have it and some don't. If they aren't already 'homesteading' where they are, they are never likely to do it.
