I worry more about putting the pick through the side of the tank (especially when my over-enthusiastic son does it for me). Closer to an outlet is further from the water source (it would mean dragging 2 lengths of hose through the barnyard, right now I can fill it from outside the fence). I had a grand scheme over the summer to construct an insulated box for the trough, painted black to absorb heat, with a plexiglass window to let in even more heat (fashioned after the expensive solar-heated waterers). Another of my brilliant ideas that hasn't come to pass (yet).

Ouch. Picking on ice can be hard on your face; it throws little sharp
splinters at you. Wear glasses. Is there any way to insulate the tank?
Maybe hay or something? Can you move it closer to an electrical outlet?

I have a large pick ax to break up the ice. It gradually ices up from the
bottom and sides, the open area getting smaller and smaller. I missed
breaking it up for about 24 hours, and it froze too solid to break up. It's
warm enough today that I might get it cleaned out and start over. I may have
to resort to a heater, but there's no outlet anywhere near there. I've seen
some nice solar-heated waterers, but they are pricey.
