My aunt told me in 1989 that when she went back to Finland for the first
time(she was about 15), her grandfather sang for her(this would have
been circa 1935) this poem that was just for her. That must be what you
are talking about. Yes, I am very interested in reading it. Susan Jane
also has Saami friends and I have been talking with her about native
clothing and such.(and susan, I know I owe you a letter-haven't
forgotten) My grandfather left the tribe and worked as a farm laborer
just south of the Arctic circle. This was around 1900, during a time
when the Scandinavian countries were mistreating the Saami much in the
way the US mistreated indigenous people here. His attempts to
assimilate were poor and he hated farm work(he came from a fishing
tribe) You guys are gonna love this part...
While working on the farms near Oulu, he became a Socialist-a Communist.
This made him a target of the Romanovs-Nikolas II, Bloody Nikolas. He
survived a couple of purges and then decided to come to the US. He still
considered himself a Communist when he finally arrived in the US. I
have seen his Finnish Brotherhood card with that listed as his political
affiliation. :)
Anyway, I am very interested in learning any at all about the indigenous
peoples of the Arctic and northern Asia/Siberia( Saami, Nenets,
Samoyeds, etc)

Bev,

My good friend in N.D. just did a wonderful article on the Saami about a sort of singing that they do. It's sacred and a dying art, you might know what I'm talking about, I can't remember what it's called. But I'll ask her to send it to me again if you're interested in reading it.

Ray, my father/grandfather and ancestors were Saami. My grandfather said that his great, great grandfather came from what is today Siberia.. So, that should explain why there are a lot of Finns in Canada and the northern US.
