Actually, I prefer a weighted matrix in making decisions. This method is useful in comparing "apples and oranges" against multiple requirements...in this case your homestead projects and financial goals. You draw a grid, and down the lefthand side put Tractors A, B, and C, Horse, and Hired Help. Across the top you put things like "initial investment cost", "readily available to grade drive way", "maintenance cost", "ability to handle hills" "freedom to travel" etc. Then, where they intersect on the grid you put a number from 1-10. You can even split the box with a diagonal line so that you and your spouse can enter different numbers. For instance, maybe you would consider the maintenance on a horse at a 6 and your husband a 10. Maybe Tractor A cannot handle hills very well and B can. Maybe hired help is readily available for grading your driveway but not brush hogging. Then, on the righthand side you can add all the numbers up and see which one is the overall best choice. Sometimes it confirms what you already know, but sometimes the results are surprising and make the best option much clearer.

Know how to do the Ben Franklin Close? Get a sheet of paper, draw a line down the middle top to bottom. Two headings: Pro and Con. Write down each thing you can think of in the appropriate column. Go with the column that has the longest list.
