Maybe the flood predicting slugs here could sense the river "coming down" from miles away by vibration? If anyone has read Watson's "Gifts of Unknown Things" which is based on his life on a tropical island, he talks about a native who could hear and predict tidal waves from sticking his head down into the ocean and listening.
