Bev, I think they are wasp galls. We have a wasp particular to our oaks that make pink balls, only they turn brown by the time they get as large as yours. The wasp stings a cell in the leaf and lays an egg, then the cell grows kind of like a cancer on the underside of the leaf. Eventually ours become brown and woody by the time they get as large as yours, and the little creature drills out. I've often thought the final product would make good lightweight beads. So check to see if these mysterious things aren't really attached to the underside of leaves.

Ours are still in a very small state, but I just took a photo and will post it to my blog www.flowerweaver.blogspot.com in a few minutes.

Bev, I'm no expert on parasitic plants, but I've never seen a native mistletoe with magenta or red berries.

Right. I haven't either.
These things are under the big oaks, all over the place, almost as
numerous as acorns. If you are under the oaks, and look down, you see
one every four inches or so. Their color fades with time. I took a few
pics of the tree, the berries, and various shots of the ground. I think
you can see them the best on the picture that was taken of the driveway.
There are probably millions of them in my 'front yard' alone, wherever
there are big oaks.

I put the pics under Miscellaneous.
