I guess they use towers here, too. And yes, I am between ridges, in a pocket..main ridges run north south on the east and west of me, and there is an adjoining ridge running east west to the north. My house sits at the bottom of a hill to the South. I suppose that is why walking out to the pasture works..the signal can then get over the hill.
I'm not sure where the closest tower is...I know there are some out by the interstate(~18 air miles to the east)
I know there are two or three dead spots on the way into the valley here before you actually lose service.
I bitch about it, but if I had access to all things modern, I would probably also have a subdivision within 15 miles of me. :)

My cell phone service works off of a tower rather than a satellite.
You're in hilly country aren't you, Bev. That screws up cell phone
connection. I don't know what technology Europeans are using, but
friends I know who go to Europe are amazed at how much better cell
phone reception and coverage is there. One of our problems is that
every company has its own towers. When I venture too far north into
Mason County (about 40 miles away) there's an area where I get out of
range of AT&T, but Verizon phones work okay. A few miles further north
and AT&T works again.

Marie
Lucky you. Unfortunately, cellphones aren't reliable here. Sometimes
they work, sometimes not. People with cellphones have to go out to the
pasture to get a few bars, and even then, it is iffy. Could it be that
telecommunications satellites are in a lower orbit than TV satellites?
