Interesting!
When I was staying in St. Louis - on East Pine, down the street from the
University and almost across the street from the zoo - a friend brought me,
in a
shoebox - what he thought was a tiny green garter snake.
It grew. And it spent an increasing amount of time coiled up in the water
dish. When it got larger, it had the run of the apartment. Didn't bother me -

what harm could a garter snake do?
When I left St. Louis I took it to the zoo, to give it to the herpetologist,
and he told me I'd been living with a water moccasin.
Faint.

as promised, I intend to release him tomorrow. I did take a picture of
him in the dirty little aquarium I put him in, but I noticed that this
morning his color has faded in captivity. His coloration has definitely
muted somewhat, but he is still a very pretty snake. Animals that can
change their color have always fascinated me.

I wonder if you might have found this snake right after a molt? I saw a
garter snake last week that had brilliant bright stripes, which brought it
to mind.
