The linguistics professor I consulted, while in the choosing process said effectively the same thing, except that in period, the pronunciation was more like I described. How they would know that, I have absolutely no idea. How they know how dead languages are pronounced. I have no idea. I suspect it is all theory, anyway.

It's the Gaelic spelling, It's still pronounced Patrick. Or more to the
point, Patrick is the English transliteration of the Gaelic Padruig. Just like
the word Sgian (which means 'knife') is transliterated as Skeen which is how it
is pronounced in either spelling.
