Median Home Values Rose 16 Percent, Survey Shows
By SAM ROBERTS
Published: October 6, 2008
The median home value in the United States rose to more than $191,000 last year as the number of houses and apartments valued at more than $300,000 soared more than 20 percent, compared with 2005, according to new Census Bureau data.

But the data does not account for plummeting prices since the subprime lending and credit crises struck.

The data is from the 2007 American Housing Survey, conducted by the bureau for the Department of Housing and Urban Development. It counted 128.2 million houses, apartments, and mobile, vacation and vacant homes, compared with 124.4 in 2005. In 2007, 110.7 million residences were reported to be occupied.

The survey found that the median home value rose about 16 percent between 2005 and 2007, from $165,344 in 2005, a slightly smaller gain than the two-year increase from $140,201 in 2003.

Among the more than 75 million homes occupied by their owners, one in three had no mortgage.

Median monthly housing costs in 2007 were $927 for owners and $755 for renters.

The 600-page survey details wide disparities in rates of home ownership, physical condition of dwellings, satisfaction with neighborhoods and dozens of other variables on the basis of race, ethnicity, income and where people live.

Among other findings: more homes have a usable fireplace than a working carbon monoxide detector and more have a garage than a dishwasher.

I do if I am canning just the meat. I don't if preparing broth. My choice. I don't know that it really matters, but is merely preference. Provided processing is correct.

Hi All,
I want to can some chicken. Do I need or should I remove the skin?

Thanks!

Sue
