Before I forget, thanks Moon for the fried pie recipe.
Last summer, we played in the canoes and ignored the wood.
This summer, we played with wood and ignored the canoes.
We hope to make up for lost time on Saturday, when we will be heading
down the Oostanaula river with NERA/CRBI. Finally, we will be basically
in our own backyard. This stretch of river is the closest to our house,
but we have never traveled this section. Here are some links with
pictures of the river and area:
http://www.newechotarivers.org/ (This is NERA, a environmental river
watch group that we are members of)

http://sunburyyachtandpleasureclub.blogspot.com/ (scroll down the
page a bit...I fish at this ramp sometimes)
http://www.gatrailoftears.org/snapshots_070113.htm (we ride bikes on
the riverwalk paths here-seen in bottom photos)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oostanaula_River (this is the takeout spot
near my house. On bad days at work, I used to stop here to fish on the
way home)
I'm actually pretty excited about it. Whenever I do things like this, I
feel transported back in time, maybe even back to the 13th century.<G>
These waters were the turf of the Cherokee and the Creek tribes, mostly
Cherokee in this specific place. The water is low and slow so there
will be lots of rocks and the river will be shallow. I think it will be
a good chance to see some really big mussels and sturgeon, among other
wildlife. It is only a 7 to 8 mile stretch, so it should take maybe 3
hours or so. It is a leisure trip with stops at shoals.
I look at trips like this as a way to gain experience on the river
should I ever need to really use it as a 'highway' as well as to study
the natural resources that I have immediate access to. I wish you guys
could go, too...well, if anyone lives in the area and wants to go, write
me and I will give you details. As always, I encourage everyone to get
involved in saving and protecting your local river and watershed. You guys
know the importance of water and ecosystems.

I thought I would mention this since so many of you enjoy politics.
At congress.org, you can subscribe to megavote
http://www.congress.org/congressorg/megavote/
which sends you an email telling you how your Reps and Senators voted, tells
you about upcoming bills and allows you to inform your rep with your views...
Check it out. We all need to be a little more vigilant about holding our
leaders to what they promise and make them stop representing special
interests and start representing us.

Our house in Virginia is on the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah. I
couldn't canoe with the kids there but upstream on the Shenandoah was
absolutely beautiful, and I know exactly what you mean about slipping back in
time. I used to imagine the same thing, what it might have been like when it
was pristine and beautiful before we messed it up. There were just enough
little rapids I felt ok with the kids in the canoe and they got a little
thrill, but mostly I could just ship the oars and let the river carry us
along. So wonderful. We had a halfway place with a sandbar where we'd picnic
and wade.
Have a great time!
PS I made an apple pumpkin bread for a community picnic the other day that
was so yummy I can't STAND it. : ) I've made it twice since and given them
away and gotten raves. Want that or are you done with apples yet? ; )
