The days of splitting wood the old fashioned way are past.  Can you say
hydraulic wood splitter??  <grunt, grunt, grunt ala Tim Allen>
DH thinks it was standing deadwood, I don't.  However, it definitely is not
soaking wet, so maybe it is.  If it was dead, it wasn't long dead.  It was a
huge tree though, and we only have the base and trunk, so the girth would
slow down the drying...I dunno James.
As to where we are going to store it, that's the rub.  Our normal place is at
capacity(5 cords there).  We have too much wood to put it under the corner of
the barn(could put about a cord there), which is our overflow area.  We are
thinking of building a roofover shelter out by the meatpole, creating a
multi-use space out there and part of that would be wood storage.  It would
just have a roof, no sides.  It would get plenty of air as the stacks would
orient north-south, and we could store multiple cords there..  However, we
don't have that yet, and may not be able to afford to do it right now.  In
the meantime I have all these logs, cut to length, piled 4 feet tall next to
my drive.  Each stack is about 18 ft in diameter, and I have two, soon to be
three stacks.  It's a lot of wood.  I don't even have enough tarps to cover
it.  I know, I know, homestead sin-to be out of tarps...lol...I know it will
be dry by the winter of 2010, I just don't
want it to be too dry and burn quickly with little heat.  I'm thinking we
don't split it until next year, but I'm worried that if we don't split it
now, it may be almost impossible to split later.

Do you plan to split it with hand tools or a pneumatic splitter??

Green wood is easier to split in most cases. Oak especially. But if the oak
was dead standing, how dry is it?

On the other hand, if you are going to store the wood out of the wet, what
would be the down side of splitting it now? </HTML>

If it's split and stacked now it's done, that chore is over. As a
side note with it split and stacked it could be sold, making it a
homestead business...
