I forgot to add this...
Don't feel bad about the lizard thing..
When we moved here, I kept hearing my neighbor talk about fishing with 'spring lizards'. Now, I'm no expert, but I do love my science, and I had never heard of that one..Come to find out, only after asking to see one, they were fishing with spotted salamanders...lol...spring lizards...
So now that I think about it, in a clear, cold spring (in any season, not necessarily Spring) you can flip over rocks and find crawdads and SPRING LIZARDS... :)

I vaguely recalled this as a kid...something did not quite sound right
so I googled rusty lizard...paydirt..
Found a book review of American Regional English and there it is...
It is the common fence lizard...AKA rusty back, rusty buck, or as I have
heard, rusty CUSS... :) And reading on down the page, in areas of
Texas, there is a rusty gut lizard...so perhaps you heard rusty gut or
cuss and combined them into cut? Or maybe cut is another local variation?

Here's the link I found:

And here is a decent page on the Eastern Fence Lizard:

Colors can vary depending on habitat. I see these guys all the time..

Bev; maybe you can answer a question , since you know a bit about SE
herpetology. What is the real name of the lizards in the south
called "rusty cuts"?....bobford
