It grows about an hour from me, as I am on the edge of the desert. It's not quite as strong as the Chinese Ephedra, but it will do well since it is native to your home. You can collect it any time of the year, and dry it in a paper grocery bag. Cut it up with hand shears into smaller pieces and use as a tea. It is also a good diuretic, and contains the most calcium of any tea.

We may share another plant you might find helpful as a pain releiver--broomweed or escoba de la vibora or "escoba" for short. It has little yellow flowers on a mounding bush that covers areas in yellow in the fall. I dry the entire above ground part of the plant when it is in bloom by hanging it upside down. Then I chop it smaller with hand sheers and then smaller in an old food processor. To use it, steep it in boiling water (discard the plant), then simulaneously add it to your bath and drink it as a tea. It works amazingly well for my arthritis.

They both make very tasty teas. The best books I have that cover these and others you could explore are Medicinal Plants of the Mountain West, and Medicinal Plants of the Desert and Canyon West, both by Michael Moore. I could not live without them.

Sandy, Mormon Tea is Ephedra, that pain releiver that the FDA is trying to do away with because it is so effective, and misused by the weight loss industry.

Sage - thank you!

I (now long of tooth and short of breath) have become increasingly dependent on Primatene Mist. Ephedrine!
And it has been increasingly harder to find. Hmmm...maybe I need to revisit erowid.com. <g>
No weight loss problem here - but gravity is indeed not my friend. It occurs to me that gravity itself is probably what precipitated the Back To the Earth movement, ever nearer and dearer to my heart - literally.
