We picked up a new buck kid this weekend. I've not turned him out with
the girls, as I want to post-pone kidding until nicer weather in the
spring. Back when I had sheep, I got my fill of lambing in sub-zero
weather. While my market for kids would likely be greater if I went
for early kidding, whatever additional money that might mean pales by
comparison to enduring sub-zero midwifery ever again!

He's a gorgeous goat, with nice dairy conformation. His mom is an
excellent milker with lovely dairy character. It will be exciting to
see what he produces with my does.

He's presently penned with a wether kid. He's dam raised and he's not
been handled, so he's wild as a March hare. I'm going to need to get
him tamed down so I can catch him and handle him, for things like
taking him to be with the girls, or hoof trimming, etc. He ate very
little in his first 24 hours here, and he's settling in VERY slowly.
So far, I cannot get him to take a treat from my hand. He doesn't
recognize anything I've offered as "food" so I think I first have to
get him to eat them from a pan, before he'd be tempted to come
anywhere near me to get food. Mostly, I just try to go into the pen
and sit for a little while a couple of times per day, to get him used
to me.

What fun! :-D
