The Smithsonian magazine has a very good article on corn and chemical fertilizer in the July 2006 issue:

I have been an advocate of corn as a food source in developing countries. However, this article shows another side of the corn story.

Interesting stuff, although I can't think soybeans anymore without
thinking about GE crops and Monsanto. Aren't almost all soybeans
genetically engineered these days? I don't know if that would affect
the hulls in anyway, but since soybeans are a seed, and the hulls are a
seed coat, and the engineering goes into the seed coat, then it seems to
me like it would affect the process somehow. I just don't know.
A conspiracy-minded?/realistic? person could easily make the leap that
now Big M wants to control drinking water by formulating a cheaper
process to filter it.
