The schools objective was to create scholars (what we would call liberal arts graduates), coupled with the message that any accomplished scholar could become a merchant to attain wealth and power.
By how? Passing regulations that ensured that only Chang scholars could possibly do business at a profit? If so, things haven't changed much.
