A water based pyrethrin spray with PPB as a synergist works pretty well (I used to use Red Arrow but not sure it's still available) but it should be used early in the day or late in the day as it degrades very quickly in sun and heat.  Sprays containing Neem are said to be effective as a repellent and growth inhibitor.   My trials last summer were inconclusive but the first Asiatic Beetle showed up today so the Japanese Beetles can't be far behind...though we've had a few nights at 38 degrees up in the mountains and that's slowed them a bit this year.
