Nancy,
Since the end of June, I've been experimenting with two products that have
Spinosad in them. One is a Gardens Alive! product called Bull's Eye.
The other is Monterey Garden Insect Spray (OMRI listed).
Spinosad is the biological control that when ingested causes the insect to
stop feeding and voila! that's the end of the devastation of the plant.
However, like so many of these products, they DO negatively impact bees so
you must spray at dusk.
The spinosad has worked fabulously on pine and hibiscus sawflies, better
than any pyrethrum-based products I had used in the past. With the
beetles, I'm finding that the combination of hand picking and spinosad spraying
is keeping their feeding to a minimum, but it's part of a daily ritual for the
month of July since the little devils fly in from it seems everywhere.
You might not be able to find the Monterey everywhere -- itÂ’s relatively
new. So your next stop can be Gardens Alive (who I think is having some
kind of summer sale right now?)
