Anna I travelled Holland by train and it was very convenient and relatively inexpensive. Leiden is approximately 30 minutes by train from Amsterdam and the Botanical Gardens there are lovely and very historical. I know you can also take the train to the tulip fields and Keukenhof.
You're going to have a wonderful trip!
