I look at a web site that had a picture of a fire pepper plant and it
was planted with a regular potting soil and they did a comparison with
the plant and added worm castings. The picture explains it all. From
what I get out of the message the people did not grow the plant. The
site is www.natureswayorganics.com I also used their products as gifts
to gardening friends

What do you experts suggest to use for a potting mix to fill containers
that
will hold kumquats and a Meyer lemon? I think I remember reading
something
about citrus needing a special potting mix.

Doreen,
Hi, I use peat moss, vermiculite and perlite. I mix it up until you can
clearly see all three ingredients.
I also use citrus food. All of my citrus are doing fine and fruiting.
I use this basic mix minus the food for all of my tropical plants. I
think
the amount of drainage that this mix offers works really well.
I have to use more peat for any outdoor winter sowing that I do however
because this mix does not work well for that. It is too fast draining.
After your request for photos this summer I found some various citrus
that
were in bad shape on clearance so I bought them. I was missing having
them
anyway. I also started some from seed. I have some lemons turning yellow
now.

Here in citrus land, we don't use any special potting mix for
citrus. As long as there is good drainage and you use citrus food,
you should be fine from a potting mix standpoint.

Hi!
Last year, someone started a thread about gifts for the gardener. The
ideas were just great so I'd thought I'd start this year's version.
So...please post any suggestions you might have re books, tools,
accessories for the greenhouse, etc. to the list.
Aside from the always welcome delivery of compost, my suggestions start
with a new book, Practical Science for Gardeners by Mary Pratt for those
of us who want to know the explanations behind all the things we already
know, e.g., what's happening to a plant when it starts to wilt. I also
got a Ross Root Feeder at the end of last summer and found it especially
good to use during this past very dry summer to help plants through that
drought period. The Fiskar's transplant spade has turned out to be
invaluable through the digging and dividing I did in spring and fall
(much lighter than all the others I have used without compromising
strength plus it stands up well to stony Ct. soil). And I'm glad to say
that the West Country gloves I've been using are the only pair of gloves
with fingertips still in tact over the course of a full year - a first
for me!
Thanks!

One thing I can't live without in my garden is a flexible polyethylene
tub. Mine is black, but Gardeners' Supply has them in a rainbow of
colors for $14.95 each. I carry prunings and spent plants to the compost
in the tub, and return with it filled with compost, to take the place of
plants that have been removed. Now I want a colored one to use for
harvests. I garden from the seat of a Celebrity Victory scooter, and it
would fit on the floorboard next to my foot. Any gardener who does not
have a hori-hori knife (Japanese farmers' knife) would love one.

Foxgloves gardening gloves let you feel the soil and all of the little
nubs on your plants -- great for the gardener who prefers bare hands but
wants clean fingernails.
