Have you had rain? Here in Chicago I have no slugs or snails either, but then we're something like 6 inches short of rain for the year and the state's corn crop is seriously threatened. Carolyn Ulrich

This year I have found no slug trails, no slug damage on the leaves of hostas (or anything else), no slugs on my stone walls, no slug celebrants partaking of the custard cups of beer I leave out. Is it possible that I have no slugs any more?
When I first moved here, 13 years ago, slugs filled up my stone walls at night, massacred any young plants I put in, crawled under any pots I put on the ground, destroyed lilies and even munched on rhododendrons. Year after year the population has declined as I've gone after the creatures early and violently. But still...I never expected the battle to be over.
Is there a virus attacking slugs? (The West Nile virus almost completely eradicated our huge population of crows that used to terrorize my cats.) Am I benefiting unexpectedly from a snowy winter, long cool spring, then hot dry summer? Are my local skunks (who seem to be proliferating) catching the creatures at night? Or have the slugs just realized that they're not welcome?
Has this happened to anyone else? I'm certainly not complaining--slug control used to take up perhaps 25% of my gardening time--but I am perplexed.
Nancy Stedman, NYC
