I've had a few Japanese beetles hanging around the garden here in Chicago each year for the last 25 years but it was only in the earliest years of my gardening that I felt I had a real problem and (blush) used a chemical control. Now, I just make a point of checking my roses daily and picking off and squishing whatever I find. (This is no problem since I'm looking at my garden daily anyway.) A few fly away, but I get most of them. If I'm feeling squeemish, I'll squish them between leaves, but most of the time I have the fortitude to do it with my bare hands.

This reminds me of the aphid problem I had in my earliest gardening days, mainly on tips of roses and tomatoes. As I increased diversity in the garden and introduced several species of prairie plants, I realized one day that I no longer had an aphid problem. My theory is that increasing plant diversity also increased insect diversity and that good guys were eating the bad guys. I was also noticing interesting new insects from time to time.

What are you using to control or defeat Japanese beetles in your garden?
I'm in the Upper Midwest, and the beetles have invaded with a vengeance in
the last 4-5 years.  They love roses.  Several of the 2006 AARS winners are
yellow, and I'm sure the test plants will be devoured, given past
experience.  Jap beetles prefer yellow and white roses to other colors.
I've used lures and milky spores, but nothing is ridding my patch of
paradise of the pesky critters.
