Well, Doreen,
Once you see Primula sieboldii in bloom in your garden you will be hooked same as Doug.. and myself and many others. One of the easiest of primula to grow. Only one species, but so many variations on a theme. Plant the roots very shallow in bright shade. They do not mind root competition so beneath a shrub or small tree with larger perennials is ok. Mulch lightly. The do have a tendency go grow themselves up out of the ground, so fresh mulch each fall is nice.
Foliage reminds me of fresh bib lettuce with crinkly leaves. Flowers are reliable and numerous. Every named cultivar has been a good bloomer for me here. When it gets hot an dry the plants simply go dormant and comes back next spring. If you do not let it dry out severely it will stay green longer in the season.
There are named cultivars from almost every nursery that grows them. Genes are really unstable in this plant and it can have all kinds of bloom shapes and colors. And... seed is easily germinated and grown on. Blooms second year.

Thanks everyone for the primula information. Gene, your article was very informative, and I ended up ordering some of your plants, including a Japanese one that Doug drools over!
