I suspect the primulas you are buying have been forced--my mother used to grow them for early sales and she shocked them into blooming by giving them a split night--which meant that if you had the misfortune to forget to close your bedroom door, your room would be flooded with light along about midnight. (We slept on the same floor as some of the plant rooms.) At any rate, this promotes early blooming but stresses the plant.
You might try repotting them and holding them in a protected spot for a year to let them recover before you expose them to the rigors of the great outdoors--and don't give them a split night the second year.
