We have just the opposite problem in Southern California. I love primula, and take photos everytime I go to foreign places like San Franciso, or to civilized places like San Diego, where the primula, and cineraria, grow like weeds.
I try to make them do their thing in Riverside, but the hot summers usually get them. A few years ago I tried putting them in a bed on the north side of the house. They've done well there, living over the summer and blooming well in the winter. Eventually I lose some, but in that low light area on the north side, they seem to prosper. So that tells me something about their light requirements. My experience in seeing them in various places, such as Idaho, my native state of long ago, is that they will live through the rigorous winters up there.
None of this helps you in your state, but it's more chaff for the memory banks.
