Out in the fabulous Hamptons where everyone wants complete privacy privet reigns supreme as the ultimate property divider. It's been reliably hardy and robust for decades and decades with only an occasional problem with two spotted spider mites.
Well....until now. A Prunicola scale seems to be spreading like wildfire and in the late summer the effects of the feeding scale (similar to mealy bugs in appearance) was to defoliate these living fences in several locations. It was mentioned to me by a garden center owner about a month ago as a great mystery...but my consulting entomologist pegged the problem in a flash.
I mentioned the 'threat' in a small boxed insert in my column two weeks ago and the panic has spread. Now the paper is doing a feature on the poor hungry scale. It's incredibly easy to control, even organically...but it's all in the timing. It should be an interesting year for privet among the privileged next summer.
