This thread has been fascinating. At our Region III meeting several
weeks ago, the group was given a tour of the new children's garden being
built at Meijer Botanical Gardens in Grand Rapids, MI. The garden
opened officially this weekend. Nancy and I were both underwhelmed. It
seemed like being a set of displays designed by adults that were really
for adults and not really for children. It is more a display for
statues than a series of real gardens with real plants designed to
attract and entertain children. On top of that we learned yesterday
that they are charging adults $10 and kids over 6 $5 to get in; an
outrageous amount in our view. One of the original public children's
gardens was built by Jane Taylor up at Michigan State 15 years ago. She
incorporated many of the ideas shared by this group in the last week.
Hardly any of those ideas can be found in the new children's garden at
Meijer's Gardens. Has anyone consolidated all the ideas in this thread
into a single document. I suspect a number of us would love to have a
copy.

Fran, I think I would make it a sensory garden with plants such as lemon
verbena and scented geraniums. They could rub the leaves and then smell
the oil on their fingers. And of course you would use Lamb's Ears and
other highly textured plants and big attractions such as sunflowers. I
would also plant things that attract butterflies and hummingbirds, and
would set aside a container of soil somewhere for a "worm hotel." Linda
