Hello Andrew,
One of my favorite native
ferns for naturalizing a rock area is the Bulblet Fern, Cystopteris bulbifera.
Usually stays round a foot or just a bit more in height, slowly expands to form
colonies. On the back side of the fronds there are live "babies" that drop and
roll when mature. Where ever they end up they begin to unfurl and establish
themselves. Placed at the top of a cliff or steep bank they will roll
downwards to form drifts resembling water flow.
If they get too dry in
summer they can brown a bit, but when moisture returns they green back up. Very
delicate and lacy in appearance, good burgundy to mahogany stems in early
spring.
