Just to add to what Lon wrote, a certification program called Certified Naturally Grown http://www.naturallygrown.org/ incorporates the good part of organic certification while eliminating the bad, such as excessive paperwork and cost. This program is especially suitable for small farmers and is receiving international interest.

Government standards have never been the best on anything, regardless of the era or the administration. Anyone who has been involved with organics long enough has plenty of experience with that. Groups like Tilth and others have long set better standards. Instead of depending on government standards, learn about some of the others. I don't know how it is in other areas, but where I live, more products follow the standards of the private groups than those of the government, anyway. The knowledgeable growers get their organic certification from the private groups, because those groups have a better following.
This story on Salon, via the AP, tells of modifications that the Bush
administration has made to the organic labeling law:

You may have to sit through an ad to access this article, but if you're
interested in buying organic food, it may be worth it.
