Hi Duane,
I write a weekly gardening column for which I supply a photo. I'm also paid more for each photo than for a feature-length column, about 1200 words, that takes me several hours to research and write. So, in my case, a photo is worth about 1200 words. I often pull from my stock photos, which I store on CDs, and can usually find something than illustrates my topic. However, when the seasons permit, I prefer to shoot something new. I use a digital camera, so it doesn't cost anything but my time to shoot a lot of photos and build my stock. If you're not digital, you might consider it. Although I enjoy photography, I still consider myself a writer first.

I was surprised, and a little nonplussed, to discover that I was paid
more for a few photos than I was for the writing, though it did put the
lie to the saying that a picture is worth a thousand words. It isn't. A
picture is worth about 400 words, at least to this publication. And while
the words cost me sweat and blood, the pictures cost me only a few
minutes to rifle through old files. Needless to say, I made arrangements
to provide art for all of my articles.
