Fungi produce acids and nitrogen in NH4+ form. Bacteria
produce a slime which is alkaline and nitrogen in NO3-form if there are nitrogen
fixing bacteria around the area...which there will be if the pH is
alkaline. These also impact the pH in the root zone.
