Ellen,

I have a sandy soil. Because of this the diotomaceous
earth seems to stay put pretty good...unless it is a downpour.
The sandy soil is abrasive also, so maybe adding sand
could help.

As for the color...I just put it around the base of the plant...like
Hostas and you can't really see much of it. This keeps it from
washing away also.
